Lorna Stefanick is a settler of mixed heritage who lives in Treaty #6 territory and is the program coordinator for the Bachelor of Professional Arts: Governance, Law, and Management program. Lorna's mother’s ancestors emigrated from Western Europe (UK) to Upper Canada in the early 1800s. Her father’s parents emigrated from Eastern Europe (Ukraine) and settled in Treaty #7 territory in the early 1900s.
Lorna’s focus on social justice is a theme that runs through her diverse research interests, which include: identity and agency, democratic participation, environmental activism, state control of Indigenous women and children, accountability in governance, information access and protection of privacy, amenity migration and local government.
Lorna’s work has been translated into multiple languages and been published in the New Global Studies, International Review of Administrative Sciences, Jornadas Argentino Canadienses de Politicas Regionales, Feminist Formations, Journal Of Nonprofit & Public Sector Marketing, Journal of Borderland Studies, Canadian Journal of Political Science, Canadian Public Administration and BC Studies. She is the author of Controlling Knowledge: Freedom of Information and Privacy Protection in a Networked World and the co-editor (with Meenal Shrivastava) of Alberta Oil and the Decline of Democracy in Canada.
